I pre-ordered Is Atheism Dead for it's witty title。 I was hoping this book would be a natural follow up for me personally in watching debates between creationists and evolutionists in the early 80's。 Back then, what struck me then was how the evolutionists resorted to more faith issues than the creationists, which was the opposite of what I thought I'd hear。 Reading this book added even more science to the creation story I'd heard long ago。 Better stated by an Oxford mathematician in the book "I I pre-ordered Is Atheism Dead for it's witty title。 I was hoping this book would be a natural follow up for me personally in watching debates between creationists and evolutionists in the early 80's。 Back then, what struck me then was how the evolutionists resorted to more faith issues than the creationists, which was the opposite of what I thought I'd hear。 Reading this book added even more science to the creation story I'd heard long ago。 Better stated by an Oxford mathematician in the book "It is science and atheism that do not mix"。 It also reveals things I never knew, even though I thought I did。 In addition to enlightening, Metaxas presents it in an entertaining way!If biases are put aside, This book will sharpen your critical thinking skills。 Hopefully it will enlighten agnostics。 For atheists, it at least adds some vertical to their leaps of faith。 。。。more

It is a collection of facts and findings rooted in science and archaeology, all held as true by our world’s leading scientists。 Metaxas does not need to do any heavy lifting as he ushers reluctant believers to the matter of God's existence; the facts themselves implicitly do the work of pointing to God and away from any rejection of His existence and His work。 Metaxas simply provides the guided tour, framing findings with their very interesting backstories and then capping off the findings with fully appropriate, thoughtful amazement at all that’s there to behold。 Metaxas’s clear thinking, his expectation that logic must be accepted by players on both sides of a debate, his humanness, and his trademark love of playful language and humor come together to warmly peel away any ease a person may have ever found resting in the arms of our modern-day leaders in atheistic thought。 。。。more

By the middle of the 20th century, many developments in science seemed to point to an eternal universe, and to life originating from random natural processes。 In “Is Atheism Dead?”, Eric Metaxas presents a broad spectrum of compelling scientific and archaeological evidence, unfolding mostly in the past 70 years, that swings the pendulum firmly to the side of a supernatural Creator who is the God of the Bible。

For me, this book further proves what Paul says in Romans 1:20 and Metaxas quotes on page 308 "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse。” Well done, Mr。 Metaxas。 。。。more

This latest work from Eric Metaxas occupies a prime place in the realm of useful enterprises。 It is both fascinating and faith-affirming, reminding us again of the powerful symbiosis between living faith and honest science。In 1966, the world's intelligentsia believed they had definitively proven God couldn't possibly exist。 Unfortunately (or fortunately) for them, science and Truth marched on, clearly and inevitably revealing that God was never in any danger of being "eclipsed" by science; He wa This latest work from Eric Metaxas occupies a prime place in the realm of useful enterprises。 It is both fascinating and faith-affirming, reminding us again of the powerful symbiosis between living faith and honest science。In 1966, the world's intelligentsia believed they had definitively proven God couldn't possibly exist。 Unfortunately (or fortunately) for them, science and Truth marched on, clearly and inevitably revealing that God was never in any danger of being "eclipsed" by science; He was just patiently waiting for science (as recognized by mortals) to catch up a bit with his wondrous mastery of the laws of the universe。I'm better off for having read this book, and I sincerely hope many others will embrace the opportunity to enhance their understanding of who we are in relation to each other, the planet on which we live, and the God who created us。 。。。more

Missing EvidenceThe author employs two bodies of evidence to answer his question- science and archaeology。 One would be hard-pressed to find a more thorough compendium of data in his answers。 The chapter titles sufficiently demonstrate how thorough Metaxas has been。 Is Atheism Dead? will become a reference book on many shelves。In the archaeology section, he does his best to ‘leave no stone unturned。’ From long-unearthed facts to the most recent discoveries, the reader will find a continuing reso Missing EvidenceThe author employs two bodies of evidence to answer his question- science and archaeology。 One would be hard-pressed to find a more thorough compendium of data in his answers。 The chapter titles sufficiently demonstrate how thorough Metaxas has been。 Is Atheism Dead? will become a reference book on many shelves。In the archaeology section, he does his best to ‘leave no stone unturned。’ From long-unearthed facts to the most recent discoveries, the reader will find a continuing resource for further discussion and enlightenment。 The stories behind the findings are well-told and insightful。The science section has intricate details in many disciplines。 The explanation of weighty matters is easily understood。 From planetology to biology the language is layman。 Here one can gain a better understanding of how things are。 But the evidence of how things got here is lacking。From the first pages, the author assumes that the universe is billions of years old。 "Some things might be difficult to believe but are still true。 The idea that the universe began in an explosion nearly fourteen billion years ago is one of them。" Yet this ‘truth’ is not a reality that can be verified scientifically。 It is not a provable fact。 The billions of years assumption may in the long run prove detrimental to the fine work Metaxas has done in most other ways。 He does well in his validating of the impossibility of intelligent life emerging from senseless matter。 Why not leave his arguable view of creation history out of the otherwise pertinent evidences? The closing arguments for truth and biographies of those who found it is poignantly written。 Readers will find here motivation and encouragement in their own pursuit of reality。 。。。more
Polly,
Eric’s spiritual gift is to reel in the uber-intelligent and make it accessible, not in bringing the material down like a children’s book but in lifting me up, cracking the door into a room to overhear great conversations。 His Bonhoeffer book did that。 The atheism conversations deal with gritty and great ideas。 I loved being in this room, especially the science pages, for several refills of coffee。 And who else is telling us about “Directed Panspermia“?!!
Kay J,
“Is Atheism Dead?” tells new stories about how the old materialist paradigms have been left in the dust by modern scientific discoveries。 Biology texts both old and new contain disproven and superseded ideas, but those bio-myths are clung to because new scientific discoveries support ideas that are unpalatable to atheists。 Likewise, Metaxas tells new stories of recent exciting archeological discoveries that show the accuracy of the Bible and also overlooked stories of how prominent atheists actu “Is Atheism Dead?” tells new stories about how the old materialist paradigms have been left in the dust by modern scientific discoveries。 Biology texts both old and new contain disproven and superseded ideas, but those bio-myths are clung to because new scientific discoveries support ideas that are unpalatable to atheists。 Likewise, Metaxas tells new stories of recent exciting archeological discoveries that show the accuracy of the Bible and also overlooked stories of how prominent atheists actually became theistic or Christians toward the end of their lives。The text rolls along, reminiscent of:1 part science text, a la Thomas Kuhn1 part best of the old Landmark adventure histories1 part literary chatterbox-warriorShake them all together with a conversational tone。 I enjoyed his references to Blake, Wilde, Shelley, Peanuts, Columbo, Star Trek…。 Metaxas is best when telling and explaining the new scientific, archeological, and personal stories, and weakest when fulminating against the new atheists; he gives them more airtime than they deserve。 I am so done with them。Metaxas ends the book by pointing to the unexplainable power of beauty to make a moment so important that you remember it for the rest of your life; he does this by relating memory touchpoints from himself and his relatives。 There is no material explanation for the power of beauty to overwhelm us。Academic culture needs a paradigm shift away from a commitment to naturalism, or atheism。 I give this book 5 stars。 The facts support these new stories and they need to be told, to the glory of God。 。。。more
